The actual installation of AST does not take up much space. However AST features an agressive caching system for its historical data. AST builds caches for historical data for every symbol on every market you have setup. This allows AST to build reports and search for patterns very quickly. If AST had to download all of this data on the fly, it would be very slow. The cache size on a typical AST install with North American markets setup is about 600 MB (clearly you don't want to download that every time you run reports!). If you want to reduce the cache size of your AST installation, you can disable markets you don't need (so data for them won't be cached) or you can reduce the size of the symbol lists for some markets.
